Swimming above a reef manta ray with a three-metre wingspan is one of the best experiences in Indonesia, and Nusa Penida is one of the easiest places to do it.
Where Do You See Manta Rays?
Most trips visit Manta Bay on the south-west coast, where mantas come to feed and get cleaned by small fish. Snorkel trips usually add calmer coral spots such as Wall Bay, Gamat Bay and Crystal Bay.
Do I Need To Be A Good Swimmer?
No. Life jackets are provided and the crew stays with you. You should be comfortable in open water, as the sea at Manta Bay can be choppy.
Tips For A Great (And Responsible) Snorkel
- Never touch or chase the mantas. Stay still at the surface and let them pass.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen or wear a rash guard.
- Take a motion-sickness tablet before the boat if you are sensitive.
- Sightings are very common, but mantas are wild animals and can’t be guaranteed.
